Ormskirk is a small market town situated on the Lancashire plain, 13 miles north of Liverpool and 18 miles south of Preston. It is the base for West Lancashire District Council and is also home to Edge Hill College of Higher Education.

It was founded when Vikings, led by Orme, settled in the area. It is believed that Orme was, or later became, a Christian as he built a church, giving the town its name: Orme's Kirk.

The Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul is on the site of the original Kirk, and is the oldest building in the town. It is one of only three churches in England to have a tower and a spire, and is unique in that it has both at the same end of the building.

In 1286 monks at nearby Burscough Priory were granted a Royal Charter by Edward I of England to hold a weekly outdoor market: today the market is held twice-weekly, on Thursday and Saturday.
